Opened in 1997, the Haute Ecole spécialisée de Suisse occidentale (HES-SO) is the largest network of vocational education in Switzerland. It now has some 15,500 students. Located in the cantons of Fribourg, Geneva, Jura, Neuchâtel, Valais, Vaud and Bern. It's 27 schools spread over 33 sites offer training and services in six major areas of training: Engineering and Architecture, Economics and Services, Design and Visual Arts, Health, Social Work, Music and Performing Arts.

The education provided by the HES-SO is practically-oriented, preparing students for professional careers which require the application of knowledge and scientific methods. In addition to studies leading to a degree, the HES-SO also offers advanced professional courses enabling students to gain more in-depth knowledge and skills. HES-SO is active in the field of applied research and development, maintaining close cooperation with scientific and commercial organisations.
