Leuven can trace its roots as far back as the 9th century when a Viking army was defeated by the Frankish king. Imec was founded in 1984 as a non-profit organization when the Flemish Government set up a program in the field of microelectronics with the goal to strengthen the microelectronics industry in Flanders.
