Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre

Leuven can trace its roots as far back as the 9th century when a Viking army was defeated by the Frankish king. Leuven became an important administrative and commercial centre in the 14th cenbury due to the cloth trade. The University of Leuven was founded in 1425, which remains one of the leading Catholic universities in the world. The building of the canal in the 18th century and the expansion of the breweries created a great impetus for trade and population growth. Leuven has developed into a well-equipped, modern town with a thriving service industry economy and with a good balance of old and new buildings.

Imec was founded in 1984 as a non-profit organization when the Flemish Government set up a program in the field of microelectronics with the goal to strengthen the microelectronics industry in Flanders. The decision was inspired by the strategic importance of microelectronics for the industry, and by the major investments required to keep up with developments in this field.

Today, Imec performs world-leading research in nano-electronics. Imec leverages its scientific knowledge with the innovative power of its global partnerships in ICT, healthcare and energy. Imec delivers industry-relevant technology solutions. In a unique high-tech environment, its researchers are committed to providing the building blocks for a better life in a sustainable society. As well as headquarters in Leuven, Imec has offices in the Netherlands, China, Japan, Taiwan and the USA. Its staff of about 1,900 include more than 500 industrial residents and guest researchers.
