Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Trento

Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) is situated in Trentino, a province in northern Italy governed under a special autonomy statute. The foundation, with more than 350 researchers, conducts studies in the areas of Information Technology, Materials and Microsystems, Italo-Germanic studies, and Religious sciences. Thanks to a close network of alliances and collaborations, FBK also conducts research in theoretical nuclear physics, networking and telecommunications, and social sciences (studies of public policy effectiveness).

The MEMS Research Unit is a research group focused on development and fabrication of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems and physical sensors. In the last few years the group has been mainly active in the research field of micro-electromechanical technologies for use in industrial controls, environmental monitoring, consumer devices, and research.

The research activity is mainly oriented towards the design, fabrication and testing of micro-sensors and micro-systems and MEMS with a specific attention to the development of dedicated fabrication process architectures. Emphasis is placed on RF micro-machined components, including RF microswitches and circuits, RF-devices on thin membranes, capacitive microphones with digital readout, and cooled and uncooled microbolometers for microwave and THz detection.
